To celebrate Law Week, Daisy, TRLS Lawyer, sat down with Pat, TRLS CEO, and produced a podcast discussing the Refugee Convention and claims for asylum based on sexual orientation.

TRLS offers a dedicated LGBTQIA+ refugee legal service representing temporary visa holders in Tasmania who have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country because of their sexual orientation.

Throughout the world, individuals experience serious human rights abuse and other forms of persecution due to their actual or perceived sexual orientation, particularly when these do not conform to dominant social and cultural norms. People fleeing persecution for reasons of their sexual orientation or gender can satisfy the definition of ‘refugee’ under the 1951 Refugee Convention, however, the legal barriers to obtain asylum are significant and complex.

Our lawyers provide free legal representation to LGBTQIA+ individuals on temporary visas, which involves hearing their story, obtaining documents and evidence, preparing and submitting the claim which can be 80+ pages in length, responding to Department questions/feedback, representing the client in interviews and hearings, possible escalation through appeals and much more.
